Archaeobotanical Study of Tell Khamîs (Syria)

Tell Khamîs, an archaeological site of the Syrian region Upper Jazeera, is 3 km east Euphrates and 31 from Yarâblûs (ancient Karkemiš); excavations determined seven different levels (Early Bronze, Middle Aramaic, Assyrian, Persian, Hellenistic, Islamic). This study aims to identify plant remains recovered during excavation place them within chronology Khamîs in context archaeobotanical evidence for Euphrates. A total 88 sediment samples were collected, seeds, via flotation, identified using optical SEM microscopy. 20,606 whole 37,646 fragments belonging 92 taxa 35 families identified. Seed lists compared with those other sites, results analyzed multivariate techniques. Barley particularly noteworthy number remains; this species was found 49 samples, notably, a silo about 4 m3 volume. Bronze Age Assyrian are richest presents maximum documented activity period, most interesting paleoenvironmental cultural point view represented by one or few seeds.
